CENTER FOR AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY - CEBTEC

(1997) The Center for Agricultural Research (CEBTEC) was created in 1981, but the experience of most of the its scientific personnel on plant tissue culture started in 1971, when Prof. Otto J. Crocomo and Dr. William R. Sharp (USA) introduced that technique in Brazil, more precisely at the Campus of the University of São Paulo in Piracicaba, SP. CEBTEC is developing R & D either in collaboration with private companies or with financil support from official entities, among them:
  • European Community (TS 1/TS 2 Programs) (1984-1992)
  • · Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos (FINEP) (1981-1998)
  • · Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) (1981-2012)
  • · US-Brazil Initiatives in Science and Technology Program (Blue Ribbon) (1989-1992)
  • · Deutscher Akademischer Austaauschdienst (DAAD)(Germany) (1988-2006)
  • · Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPQ) (1981-2010)
· Private Companies who gave and given support to CEBTEC are:
· Johnson & Johnson (1982-1984): Eucalyptus: callus production

· Duratex Florestal and CAFMA Agrícola (1984-1990): Eucalyptus (clonal micropropagation and in vitro selection) and Pinus (micropropagation and rooting)

· Brazilian Venture Capital (1986-1991): a) pineapple micropropagation; b) strawberry micropropagation and mother plants production

· Citrovita Agrícola (Votorantim Group) (1989-1992) citrus micrografting

· Citoplanta (1991-1992): strawberry micropropagation; mother plants and fruit production

· Cia Suzano de Papel e Celulose (1993-1997): isoenzymes for characterization of in vitro propagated forest trees

· Agricultural Producers (1995-1998): fruit (banana) micropropagation
2000-2012 - Research with sugar cane, banana, bambu, strawberry, eucalyptus,
